Beiyang Fleet Ironclad - Dingyuan

  • move
Michael Maynard shares another fine creation with us here at Model Shipwrights. This time he has brought some life into an old bZhengdefu kit of the Chinese ironclad, the Dingyuan .

Michael's Dingyuan is 1/300 scale and was offered by the Zhengdefu company. He purchased the kit for $2.99 at a toy store that was closing. When he opened the kit, he realized why it was so inexpensive: it was basically an un-assembled toy, complete with electric motor. Michael almost tossed it in the trash, but said, "I have a fondness for early steam era warships".

Michael used the hull, superstructure and a few of the kitís parts and tossed the rest. There were so many improvements made, he did not want to list all of them. Michael's primary list of biggest changes; wood deck, new anchor pockets, new bow, an armor belt, brass gun tubes and masts, photoetch railings and ladders, addition deck guns, portholes, new davits with small boats, and ratlines. The model was a challenge but also a lot of fun.

Model Shipwrights would like to thank Michael Maynard for providing this photo feature to us.

Wow, almost like building one of the Revell Flower Class corvettes.
