IJN Seaplane Tender, Akitsushima

  • Box Art
Frank Portela shares with us a fine gallery of images, of the IJN Seaplane Tender, Akitsushima.

"This build is of Pit Road's waterline, 1/700th scale IJN Seaplane Tender Akitsushima. The model comes with both the Emily and the Mavis float planes. This special release (W50) came with a small P.E. fret with replacement parts for the main mast, 35t crane, bridge platform supports, front and rear DF antenna masts and aircraft parts."

"I built her up about 5 years ago mostly out of box, only adding railings. Top notch fit with Pit Roads usual soft light grey plastic. Looking back at the model now, I find myself questioning my choice of paints, the model is too bright, the linoleum an odd coat of orange, and the railings a contrasty light grey".

"The base is a mixture of fine silty sand mixed with white glue and water (about 60-20-20%) this mixture was sculpted to the ships edge and allowed to dry. Once dry, I used oil paints to cover the sand, a mix of blue with a touch of green, yellow and white. Once dried, I hand painted gloss coats to get the reflection off the water."

I've got one of these & I'd like to try to do this camouflage scheme. Any ideas as to the paint shades, say in Colourcoats or the equivalent? Thanks.

very nice! special mention for the little Emily! I really like the way all the colours match each others -even the red plaque just adds something to the whole, congratulations for a very appealing model/diorama JB

Thank you all for the kind words. Ken, I'd like to help you out with the colour selection but I'm afraid it's been a while since I painted the ship. To make matters worse, I use a mix of pre-shading and post-shading, which means there's probably about 4 to 5 layers of greys and greens on the hull of the ship. Paints are mainly Tamiya and Polly Scale acrylics followed by water colours for the washes, the details are hand painted with Humbrol enamels. Frank
