Introduction

Veteran Model continue to supply us with great aftermarket detail sets for the 350th IJN ships. This set gives you ten replacement Type 96 25mm Twin AA guns. The multi-media set includes resin components and a photo-etch fret.

and, looking closer...

The two resin parts make up the gun assembly and the mounting base. Both of these parts are very well sculpted with minimal flash.

The remainder of the assembly requires careful photo-etch folding. The range dial and gun sight sits on top of the gun assembly. The right side rotating (pointer) wheel is comprised of two photo-etch parts with a combined five bends in about a 4mm space. This assembly attaches to the mounting base. The left side range elevating dial is one piece photo-etch, with four folds which attaches to the mounting base. The remainder of the photo-etch rounds off the details. Included are shields for both the range and the pointer operator and seats for both operators.

Assembly is straight forward, but with a model this small, a great deal of patience will be required. This set of ten guns will fit any of the current crop of 350th scale IJN ships and is a must if you plan on dressing up your build.

SUMMARY
Highs: Very clean resin, highly detailed. Great deal for what you pay.
Lows: Veteran Model could do a bit more to ensure the guns do not get damaged in shipping. My box of ten has two that have been damaged in shipping, maybe some resin plugs at the side of the fragile barrels.
Verdict: Great replacement set for the twin 25mm AA guns. Considering how many of these guns are found throughout most Japanese ships and how good these replacement guns are, Veteran Model should do very well.

Really nice looking kit. 4 is the perfect number for the Nagato, but you need 6 for the Kongo and a whopping 12 for the Yamato. $20 adds up quickly. The ones with the Nagato and the Kongo are pretty nice, but the ones with the Yamato are dated, still an additional $60 is a bit prohibitive. Edit: I am talking about the 12.5cm guns here as the article talked about both and I focused on the larger ones. If one of the editors would be so kind as to put my responese in the correct area, I would be appreciative.

The problem with trying to figure out how many of these you need for your ship is interesting. They had single mounts, some double and some triple mount 25mm AA. I know that 10 would be perfect for the Nagato, didn't research into the Yamato....it said 115 25 mm. These are far superior to the ones in the Nagato kit, so I might have to pick up a box for both the Nagato and the Kongo.

Nice stuff, yet another reason to start considering going up to 1/350 and make my banker scream "Uncle" more often than he does already. Thanks for the review Frank.
